I was in Austin recently as my human and I were making the rounds in the US, and I could talk about the various steakhouses there, and in the rest of Texas for that matter, but instead I’m choosing to tell you about the best mac & cheese I had there because it was the best I’ve had so far (in the US, not counting butter pasta). My human and I went to Farmands which must’ve opened recently judging from waiters’ comments, and the first thing to note about it would certainly be its meager menu, with only one side of the page being for food and the other only being utilized for wines, but don’t take meager to mean lack of quality, because I quickly learned that this restaurant prefers quality over quantity. After having an appetizer of pretzel sticks (which came with pimento cheese), and after a disappointing lack of chocolate milk before settling for lemonade, I ordered the kids' mac & cheese, of course.
When my mac & cheese arrived I quickly became aware that this was no ordinary mac & cheese, for you see it had, first of all, a fusilli pasta shape, and second of all, an extremely generous helping of cheese on top, and, believe me when I say, that this was the most creamy stringy and cheesy mac & cheese I’ve ever had. It’s especially impressive considering the fact that this was ordered off the kids' menu, so they didn’t have to make it so bourgeoisie (fancy in a positive way), but they did. It reminded me of Smac’s (NYC) mac & cheese, which was another notable mac & cheese I’ve had, though they both have extremely different styles. That’s probably enough talk about mac & cheese for one day though, so I’ll just wish you a good day now.
